“In return for restoring the historic stained-glass window of St Giles, permission was granted for the lodge to take the saint's image as its emblem.”
Founded in 1978. Rooted in community.
From the beginning, the lodge has been about friendship, community, and giving good men the opportunity to grow together.
The lodge was formed following a great rise in interest in Freemasonry, when eighteen members of St John's Lodge met at The Swan Hotel in Lichfield with a vision to create a new lodge, welcoming for local men.
With many of the founding members living in and around Whittington, the lodge proudly took its name from the village church of St Giles. Permission was granted by the Diocese to use the image of St Giles from the church's stained-glass window as the lodge's emblem, in return for the lodge funding the restoration of the historic window — the beginning of a long and valued connection with the local community.
Whittington St Giles Lodge was officially consecrated on 9 March 1978 at Drayton Manor Park, attended by senior Grand and Provincial Officers. Since then, the lodge has continued to thrive, combining Masonic tradition with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere that appeals to men of all ages and backgrounds.
A modern lodge, with proper traditions
Today, the lodge meets six times a year — in September, November, January, March, April, and May — with the Installation of a new Worshipful Master taking place every May. While Freemasonry values tradition, the lodge itself is modern, social, and welcoming, with members ranging from experienced professionals to younger men looking to build friendships, confidence, and a stronger connection to their community.
Service to the parish
Over the years, the lodge has proudly supported both local and charitable causes. Members have contributed to projects at St Giles Church including the installation of a handcrafted oak altar rail and funding modern audio and Wi-Fi systems to help improve services for the congregation.
The lodge continues to grow, and in 2025 proudly welcomed three new Brothers into Freemasonry — a sign of the strong interest from younger men seeking friendship, personal development, networking opportunities, and the chance to be part of something meaningful.

A unique and rewarding experience.
Freemasonry combines tradition, personal growth, friendship, and purpose.
Our members come from all walks of life, backgrounds, and beliefs. What unites them is a shared commitment to strong moral values, integrity, and respect for others.
Above all, Freemasonry encourages its members to contribute positively to society through charitable work and service to others. It offers a welcoming social environment where men can connect freely, without the divisions of politics or religion.
While some misconceptions still exist, the reality is far simpler: Freemasonry is a community of men striving to be better individuals, enjoying each other's company, and making a real difference in the world.

Why are people sometimes suspicious?
Historically, Freemasonry has not always communicated openly, which has led to misunderstandings and myths. Today, that is changing. We are proud to be far more open and approachable, while still preserving the traditions that make Freemasonry special.
Yes, we have ceremonies. Yes, we wear aprons. Yes, we have traditions and modes of recognition. But there is nothing mysterious or sinister — these are simply part of a rich heritage that enhances the experience and enjoyment of membership.
Why is it called a fraternal organisation?
Freemasonry is built on fraternity — on genuine friendship and mutual respect. Men from all backgrounds come together as equals, forming bonds that often last a lifetime.
To preserve harmony, discussions of religion and politics are not permitted during Lodge meetings. This ensures a peaceful, respectful, and inclusive environment for all. Our meetings include structured ceremonies — often described as "moral plays" — which teach valuable lessons through symbolism and tradition.
After each meeting, members gather socially — sharing a meal, conversation, and laughter. This is where friendships truly flourish. Family life is always the priority, and membership is designed to complement, not compete with, personal commitments.

The Lodge of Instruction (LOI), led by an experienced Preceptor (the Masonic word for teacher), provides guidance in ritual and symbolism, opportunities to practise ceremonies, and a relaxed and supportive learning environment. LOI meetings are informal, friendly, and open to all members — whether progressing through offices or simply wishing to deepen their knowledge. Refreshments and camaraderie are always part of the experience.
